Cognitive and Behavioral Strategies for Effectively Serving Clients with Traumatic Brain Injury
Brain injury, particularly those considered to be “mild”, are too often undiagnosed and unrecognized as a contributing risk factor for behavioral health issues, including substance use disorder. An April article in the American Journal of Psychiatry revealed, that in the largest study yet to investigate the link, even a single mild brain injury increases the risk of mental illness, especially if the injury occurs during adolescence. This session will provide a short overview of the causes and consequences of brain injury, and provide detailed strategies to address cognitive and behavioral challenges frequently seen in this population. Attendees will be introduced to a community based brain injury system of care and learn of resources to help serve this population.
